Retrofit Bootcamp Learners Visit a Victorian Gem in W10

The first cohort of Retrofit Assessor and Energy Efficiency Specialist Bootcamp learners recently visited a stunning Victorian house in W10. This experience offered a rare opportunity to witness an A-rated energy-efficient property while appreciating the intricate craftsmanship of a 19th-century home.

With its iconic high ceilings, beautifully retrofitted sash windows, and timeless architectural details, the house is a living reminder of the Victorian era’s artistry. Yet, it also serves as a glimpse into the possibilities of merging historical preservation with modern sustainability.

It’s truly rewarding to see our learners connect their skills to meaningful causes like addressing climate change. This experience I am sure it will enhance their learning and it will inspire them to be the best green doctors to a sustainable future. Slowly but surely we are getting closer to net zero. – Andreea Butnaru, Green Skills Course Leader at WAES

Bridging Heritage and Innovation

Inside the property, the retrofit team has laid out an ambitious plan to blend state-of-the-art green technologies with the home’s historic charm. Key upgrades include an A+++ rated boiler, energy-efficient LED lighting, breathable insulation materials, new air bricks for the suspended floor, and a 5kW solar PV system. These improvements aim to enhance energy efficiency while preserving the building’s character and historical significance.

Hands-On Learning with Real-World Impact

The learners are not just observers but active participants in this journey. They will contribute to developing and implementing solutions that respect the home’s heritage while prioritising sustainability for future generations. This project offers them a perfect opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting, leaving a tangible impact on a historic property.

Another fantastic opportunity for our learners to see first hand how the skills they’re learning will support the climate change agenda. – Arinola Edeh CBE, Principal at WAES
