Great Big Green Week 2025

This year’s Great Big Green Week at WAES was a vibrant celebration of sustainability, creativity, and community. A wide range of engaging activities took place across all centres, giving both staff and learners meaningful opportunities to get involved and reflect on their role in tackling climate change.

One of the standout features was the VR Sustainability Stand, set up at each of our centres. This immersive experience allowed users to explore environmental challenges and solutions in a virtual setting, sparking conversations and inspiring action across the WAES community.

Another highlight was our Pledge Tree, which invited everyone to make a personal commitment toward reducing their environmental impact. From pledging to reduce plastic use to adopting greener travel options, the tree quickly blossomed with inspiring promises from learners and staff alike.

A creative twist to the week came with ‘The Great Big Green Write’ a sustainable stories workshop where learners combined personal experiences with green topics to write compelling short stories. Not only did the activity enhance writing skills, but it also formed the basis of a friendly competition. Read the winning and highly commended entries below.

Our main event and a true first for WAES was the Clothes Swap Shop, run by Staff and our Inclusive Pathways learners. The event encouraged participants to refresh their wardrobes in a sustainable way, while promoting the important message of reusing and reducing textile waste.

The week was a testament to the power of education, creativity, and community action in shaping a greener future. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and contributed to making WAES’ Great Big Green Week truly special.
