WAES Inclusive Pathways Awards
Learners, families, staff, governors and partners came together to celebrate achievement at the Annual WAES Inclusive Pathways Awards, recognising the progress, dedication and success of learners across the Inclusive Pathways provision. Hosted by Oyinda Malafa, Inclusive Pathways and ALS Curriculum Manager, the event was divided into two ceremonies, celebrating learners on both the Employment Pathways and Independence Pathways programmes.
The morning Employment Pathways ceremony began with a welcome from WAES Principal, Arinola Edeh, who congratulated learners on their achievements and reflected on the importance of creating opportunities that enable everyone to reach their full potential. Guests then heard from representatives of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), one of WAES’ valued partners. Through this partnership, learners have been able to access volunteering opportunities at London Zoo, gaining valuable workplace experience while developing confidence and employability skills.
Certificates were presented by representatives from ZSL, Councillor Angela Piddock and Carolyn Keen, Vice-Chair of the Board of WAES Governors. Learners were recognised for achievements across a wide range of categories, including volunteering, work experience, communication skills, commitment to learning, personal development, determination, teamwork and progression. Special awards were also presented to celebrate exceptional achievements and contributions throughout the year.
The afternoon ceremony focused on learners from the Independence Pathways programme and opened with a welcome from Alison Muggridge, Assistant Principal. Guests were honoured to hear from The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Karen Scarborough, who congratulated learners on their achievements and highlighted the importance of inclusion, resilience and lifelong learning. The Lord Mayor then presented certificates recognising achievements in areas such as creativity, volunteering, wellbeing, attendance, participation, supporting others and commitment to learning. Special awards were also presented to learners who had made an outstanding contribution to their learning communities.
A highlight of both ceremonies was hearing directly from learners, who shared reflections on their experiences and spoke proudly about the progress they had made throughout their learning journeys. Their words provided a powerful reminder of the confidence, independence and skills developed through the Inclusive Pathways programmes.
“I would like to say a big thank you to all the teaching assistants. You have inspired me to do my best in the classroom. I will miss all of my amazing teachers and mates. Following the presentations, guests enjoyed refreshments and food prepared by Omolara Akinwunmi, providing an opportunity for learners, families, staff and partners to celebrate together and reflect on a successful year.
The Annual Inclusive Pathways Awards remain a highlight of the WAES calendar, recognising not only achievement but also the determination, resilience and personal growth demonstrated by learners throughout the year. WAES congratulates all award recipients and learners on their well-deserved success and thanks everyone who contributed to making the event such a memorable celebration.
