Marcin Tumidajski

I was a journalist back in Poland (mainly magazines and radio) however reached a point where I no longer felt any job satisfaction, so I came to the UK in 2013 in search of a more open society and a country known for its musical history I know I would feel at home.

I took an assessment on the government website to see which industry I would suit in terms of my career and the industries that came up was information sciences. Initially I thought this was programming because of the image however it was really about archives, books etc. which has always been an important part of my life. In the past I had hosted a radio show about books so from there I decided to pursue a Government Apprenticeship.

I enrolled onto the Level 3 Libraries, Information and Archives Assistant Apprenticeship and my placement at the Paul Hamlyn Library in the University of West London. I had to take time off due to personal reasons but still completed the course in 18 months.

I enjoyed all aspects of the course theory practice, copyright library, policies, catalogue.  All 12 assignments gave me the opportunity to visit some lovely institutions such as the National Gallery reading rooms Lambeth Palace and more, I enjoy exploring behind the scenes. Networking with my colleagues is also a bonus.

The most challenging part was juggling the coursework, job and being a father. My Tutor Jenny’s acumen is impressive, she is very understanding! Without the support of Jenny and my colleagues this apprenticeship wouldn’t have been possible.

I’m now in a job that is fulfilling and can see myself in for the long term which has a positive impact on my family’s well being.  This world needs makers and I’m proud when my kids say “my daddy is a librarian”.
