What is the course about?
Develop your creativity through hands-on art making in a supportive studio environment. This practical course introduces a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, helping learners to explore how artists develop ideas and turn them into finished work. Whether you are new to art or returning to a creative interest, the course will help you build confidence in your own artistic practice and understanding of contemporary art processes. The course is taught by John Timberlake, a practising artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Studio Practice at Middlesex University, London. He is also a Community Cultural Learning Tutor at WAES. John holds a PhD in Art from Goldsmiths and is an alumnus of the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program.
Suitable for beginners and returning learners. No previous art experience is required.
You will experiment with a range of artistic materials and techniques including drawing, painting, and printmaking. Alongside practical activities, you will explore how artists generate and develop ideas, investigate different artistic approaches and create your own work inspired by a range of artists and styles.
Learning takes place through practical workshops, tutor demonstrations, individual creative projects and group discussion. You will receive guidance and feedback throughout the course to support the development of your skills and confidence.
The full course fee is £60 for all regardless of status. Basic materials will be provided. Learners may wish to purchase additional specialist materials for their individual projects and sketchbook for independent work.
You will gain experience of working with a variety of art materials and processes, develop creative and observational skills, and build confidence in producing and discussing your own artwork. You will also gain a better understanding of how artists create and communicate ideas through visual media.
Learners may progress to Drawing and Painting, Printmaking, Portfolio Development, accredited Art and Design courses, or other Community and Cultural Learning art and crafts programmes.
