Our introductory Level 1 Hair and Makeup courses are for people who are new to the industry and unsure if they want to work in hair or media make-up. Upon completion of the course, learners will have received a thorough induction into both the hair and media make-up sectors, thus enabling them to decide which career path they wish to pursue.
Our nationally recognised women’s hairdressing and men’s barbering courses can be completed at Levels 2 and 3. On these courses you will gain the knowledge required to develop the skills needed to secure employment in the industry or become self employed.
Our hairdressing courses are popular for those looking to work in the industry in a variety of roles and specific fields such as hair for TV, film, theatre, fashion shoots and commercials, as well as in salons and spas. Examples of job titles for those who specialise in hairdressing include bridal hair stylist, salon hair stylist, colour technician, barber, freelance hair stylist, salon manager or owner.
Nationally-recognised media and theatrical makeup courses are delivered at Levels 2 and 3. On these courses, you will gain the knowledge and develop the skills required to secure employment in the industry or become self-employed.

This VTCT Entry Level Certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills will enable you to perform hair and beauty skills. This qualification will introduce you to practical hair and beauty skills and techniques involved in creating a total look; via the unit called Create your own hair and beauty image. You will cover a range of techniques which will enable you to achieve a total look.Also included, care and hygiene in the salon and communication skills.
The main purpose of the VTCT Level 1 Award in Hair and Beauty Skills (VRQ) is to enable you to develop hair and beauty skills, techniques and knowledge, which will prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning. All the units in this qualification directly prepare you for further study in the hair and beauty sector.All units in this qualification have been designed as a foundation for further study both in the hair and beauty sector and more broadly. The qualification includes one main unit in Create a Hair and Beauty Image using colour.
The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills through introducing you to the hair and beauty industries and how you should present a professional image in the salon. To further enhance your practical skills you also cover the following hair and beauty units; plaiting or plaiting and twisting hair, shampoo and conditioning hair, themed face painting, styling hair using hairdressing techniques, basic make-up application, skin care, create an image using colour or hair and beauty techniques, colour hair using temporary colour, salon reception duties, how to follow health and safety and working with others in the hair and beauty sector. The VTCT Level 2 Award in Preparing to Run a Hair and Beauty Business has been specially designed to enable you to gain the skills, knowledge and understanding required to be a successful beauty therapy or hairdressing entrepreneur, including an awareness of the benefits and risks involved in running your own business.
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up is a qualification that has been specifically designed to enable you to learn both aspects of hairdressing and media make-up. The qualification will provide you with all the skills and techniques to enable you to; provide effective client care, the art of applying make-up or photographic makeup, the creative art of dressing hair. Other areas covered will help support your career path; these include - application of skin tanning, provide eyelash and eye brow treatment, body art design, client consultation for hair services, using temporary or semi-permanent colour, the dexterous skill of plaiting and twisting hair, make and style a hair addition.
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting or dressing women’s hair, how to provide effective shampooing and conditioning services, the artistic skill of colouring and lightening hair and how to provide a good consultation service for your clients. To further enhance your practical skills you will have the opportunity to choose from the following units; how to create a hair and beauty image, plaiting and twisting hair, colouring hair using semi and temporary colour, style and finish African type hair, displaying stock or promoting products and services to clients and the opportunity of working on a salon reception. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of each unit including health and safety and what it is like to work in the hairdressing industry.
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up is aimed at those wishing to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide a wide range of creative make-up services in media, theatre, and fashion and photographic settings.
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques in the following units; the creative art of cutting women’s hair, the artistic skill of colouring, imaginative dexterity of styling and dressing hair, and how to provide effective consultation support for colleagues. To develop your skills further you will also be given the opportunity to gain extra units such as bridal hairstyling or technical colour correction. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of monitoring health and safety whilst working in the hairdressing industry.
