Ben H. Catling

I am a trainee Conservation Technician at Imperial War Museum Duxford. As apart of my apprenticeship I am study a Level 3 Collection Technician course, specifically the conservation pathway.

Prior to working at IWM, I worked at one of the UKs largest Smoke and Barbecue restaurants as a chef. Alongside this I freelanced as a photographer which I still do to this day!

Away from work, I have a interested in First and Second World War Military history specifically in piston engined aeroplanes, vehicles and tanks. As well as passion and interest for photography.

I applied for my position at IWM after having a life long passion for military history, specifically in Aviation and Armoured Vehicles. My passion for military history was captivated since attending my first airshow at IWM Duxford in 2008. So since joining IWM its been a privilege to work with the extensive collection of historic objects.

Since starting my course at WAES, Collection Technician Level 3 – it gives us apprentices a greater understanding of museums, how they work etc. I have enjoyed gaining a better understanding of the entire museum sector – specifically how collections of objects are protected for future generations.

One of my greatest achievements at WAES is continuing to learn and better understand the museum sector. I’ve faced no challenges currently.

Working in the Conservation Department – Hangar 5 at IWM Duxford, I absolutely love and enjoy my line of work something always different to do and learn about. New techniques, different object to learn how to take apart etc.

Once completed my course, I plan to continue to work in the museum sector specifically in the conservation of historic military vehicles and vintage aeroplanes.

If you have an interest and passion for conservation and looking after historic objects! Go for it! You’ll learn a lot! It will give you a great overview to the field sector!
