I’m Bruce, originally from Hong Kong, and I’ve been living in London for a few years. Before joining WAES, I worked in marketing, project coordination, and IT roles across various sectors. Most recently, I worked as an IT Coach at a local centre, helping people build essential digital skills, troubleshoot basic tech issues, and gain confidence in using computers for everyday tasks.
I enrolled on the Retrofit Advisor and Domestic Energy Assessor Bootcamp because I wanted to contribute to the UK’s Net Zero goals in a practical way. I’m deeply motivated by sustainability and climate action, and I’ve been particularly struck by the impact of carbon emissions and fuel poverty in the UK. I saw this course as an opportunity to retrain in a meaningful, future-facing field with strong demand.
The course combined content from the Level 2 Understanding Domestic Retrofit and Level 3 Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA) qualifications. We covered topics such as PAS 2035 standards, retrofit roles, RdSAP assessments, energy efficiency principles, and occupant engagement. I especially enjoyed the real-life site visit; seeing solar PV systems and flat roofing installation in action helped me connect theory to practice. It was also inspiring to learn alongside others who shared a passion for sustainability.
The teaching was excellent. Our tutor, Andreea Butnaru, was highly professional, knowledgeable, and supportive. She explained complex ideas clearly and maintained a positive, inclusive learning environment. The course was well structured, combining classroom learning with real-life examples and practical exposure.
I successfully passed the Level 2 Retrofit exam and fulfilled all requirements for the Level 3 DEA qualification. I’m now an accredited Domestic Energy Assessor with Elmhurst Energy. This has given me a solid foundation in energy efficiency and opened new doors in the sustainable energy sector.
Additionally, I was proud to be awarded Green Skills: Learner of the Year 2025 and nominated by WAES for the Net Zero Hero category in the national “Get the Nation Learning” awards. These honours reflect both my dedication and the strong support I received from the WAES team.
This course has given me the technical knowledge and industry insight needed to pursue retrofit and sustainability roles. I’m actively applying for jobs as a Domestic Energy Assessor and related positions. It has also motivated me to aim for further qualifications, such as Level 5 Retrofit Coordinator, and to continue growing in the green sector.
I’ve already started sharing my knowledge to raise awareness of energy efficiency within my community. I’ve supported friends, learners, and clients in understanding EPC ratings, choosing insulation materials, and identifying ways to reduce energy bills. I’m also honoured that my story will be featured on the WAES website, and I hope it encourages others to pursue green skills training.
If I could give advice to someone wanting to learn at WAES is, don’t hesitate. This course is a fantastic entry point into a growing industry with real purpose. The learning is practical, the support is strong, and the opportunities are real, especially if you’re passionate about sustainability and ready to start a new chapter.
