Preparing for Learning

Starting a course can feel exciting, daunting, or a bit of both — especially if you’re returning to learning after a break. This page is completely optional and is here to help if you’d like to do a little thinking ahead of time.

There’s nothing you need to do before your course starts.

Getting into a learning mindset

Learning as an adult is different from learning at school. Adult learning is collaborative, respectful and shaped by the experience learners bring with them.

Everyone starts from a different place. Asking questions, taking things at your own pace and using the support available are all part of the learning process.

Things you might find helpful before you start

You don’t need to do all — or any — of the following. These are just ideas that some learners find useful:

  • Make a note of your course timetable and location
  • Think about how learning will fit around your other commitments
  • Let family members or employers know when your course begins
  • Refresh basic digital skills if you’re feeling unsure

Preparing for study

Some courses may suggest reading, materials or equipment. If this applies to you, your tutor will explain what’s needed during induction or in your first session.

Coming with an open mind, a willingness to participate and some time set aside for learning is far more important than prior knowledge.

Tips from adult learners

  • Attend regularly where possible
  • Ask for help early if something isn’t working
  • Use the support that’s offered — it’s there for you
  • Be patient with yourself as you settle in

Final thought

Everything above is optional. Induction is designed to guide you through what you need to know, and support is available throughout your course.

You’re not expected to arrive fully prepared — just ready to begin.
