This is a Level 3 course, and applicants will need to have Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths or a grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths AND a minimum of a Level 3 in the subject/s they wish to teach to undertake this qualification. You do not need to have any prior experience or qualifications in teaching to apply for this course. All applicants will be required to undertake an initial assessment in English, Maths and ICT (Digital) Skills regardless of prior qualifications as teachers need to be able to embed this common core in their own subject areas. The initial assessments will allow us to determine an action plan on what areas trainee teachers should focus on as part of their professional development.
The Level 3 Award introduces you to the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector: Unit 1: Understanding the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, Unit 2: Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training (includes a 15 minute micro-teach on a subject of your choice), Unit 5: Understanding assessment in education and training.
Delivered by our highly experienced team of tutors, you will develop your theoretical knowledge as well as have regular opportunities to put your emerging teaching skills into practice. You will be taught mostly in a face-to-face classroom, although some delivery will be online in order to support your development as a confident teacher in the online or hybrid classroom. This will include learning about MS Teams and how to use some of the necessary functions for effective online delivery, for example: using the chat effectively for contributions, breakout rooms for collaboration, and quizzes and polls for feedback. You will be assessed through written and spoken assessments which you will upload into an online portfolio. There is also a practical element to the assessment. This will include delivering a 15-minute micro teach session and completion of a minimum of 45-minutes of peer observations. Your work will be internally and externally verified to ensure all the criteria are met.
A key part of the journey to becoming a teacher is developing good organisational skills, so folders with dividers and document pockets will be essential to organise any notes and worksheets. You will also need access to a laptop or PC and have Wifi. Some delivery will be online in order to prepare you for the online and hybrid teaching world, plus, you will benefit from this for easy completion and uploading of assessments.
This course provides the first steps towards further teacher training as well as a range of progression routes into teaching and/or other training roles and employment.
