What is the course about?
This programme has two qualifications. The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting or dressing women’s hair, how to provide effective shampooing and conditioning services, the artistic skill of colouring and lightening hair and how to provide a good consultation service for your clients. . The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; the creative art of cutting men’s hair, the specialist work of cutting facial hair and how to offer a good consultation service for clients. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification. The purpose of these qualifications are to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.
This is a Level 2 course. You should have a Level 1 Diploma in women's hairdressing or equivalent experience. You will need to have an English qualification such as GCSE Grade C or above (5-9) or at least a Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths. In addition you will need to show evidence of having and basic IT skills by completing an assessment.

Plaiting and Twisting Hair.
The course will be taught through a blend of practical work, demonstrations and theory classes delivered on site in class and on line. Learners will work on live models and training heads. You will sit exams which will assess your theory knowledge and build a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed in order to demonstrate your competence and gain your qualification. You will need access to reliable internet and the use of a PC or laptop in order to attend the online sessions. You will receive regular homework to increase your skills and knowledge. You will have regular reviews and be set targets. This will keep you on track so you achieve this qualification.
Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365. Learners are expected to provide their own kit of brushes, combs and scissors if not eligible for Bursary support. Your tutor can advise you on this in week 1 about the kit you will need to purchase.
You will have professional skills which include client consultation, shampoo and conditioning, different cutting techniques, styling and dressing techniques, colouring and perming, Health and safety, and salon practices within the industry. You should be in the position to apply for the role of a junior stylist. If you choose to, you could progress to a level 3 Hairdressing qualification.
Upon successful completion of this course you can go directly into employment in the hairdressing industry as a junior stylist or progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing.Career opportunities as a junior unisex hairdresser/stylist exist in a variety of contexts, including:- Commercial unisex salons- Specialist African type unisex salons- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings- Product manufacturing and training- Television, film, theatre and media- Armed services- HM prison service- Cruise liners
