What is the course about?
This is a practical foundation course, designed for people interested in a career in floristry, but who have little or no previous experience.You will learn basic floristry skills and techniques week by week. You will create practice designs to build your knowledge and confidence, which will enable you to produce designs suitable for studying at a higher level. You will also gain skills in completing written and computer based assignments.
Please note, this is a WAES certified course, and will allow you to progress onto our ‘Level 2 Technical Certificate in Floristry' course.
This is equivalent to a Level 1 course and is suitable for people interested in a career in floristry but who have little or no previous experience.
All applicants must have:
• An interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.
• English and maths at Entry 3 or equivalent. If you wish to move on to a Level 2 course, you will be advised to study Functional Skills, Level 1 English alongside this course.
• Basic IT skills
- You will prepare flowers and foliage for flower designs. This important preparatory stage will ensure your displays last longer and stay fresher.
- Recognising some flower and plant materials and knowing their botanical and common names.
- Creating flower designs aimed to meet the assessment criteria.
- Introduction to floristry tools and equipment.
- Understanding elements and principles of design in floristry and how to create and use techniques within a design.
- Conditioning methods and care of cut flowers.
- Health and safety awareness to keep yourself and colleagues safe.
- An art and craft element will be covered as part of the course to enable you to be able to understand colour texture etc and the relevance this has when creating flower designs.
- Creating a portfolio of work to keep and show as evidence for assessment.
You will keep a record of your work each week covering health and safety and evaluation of your designs and progress. Computer skills will be used throughout the course with guidance available.
Most floristry materials are included in the cost of the course, with exceptions to any specialist flowers or materials that you may request, which you will need to pay for. You also require a floristry toolbox and apron, and a large ring binder folder, pens, pencils and eraser.
You will have developed confidence and gained skills and knowledge to create designs to a standard to attain the qualification and progress onto our Level 2 Technical Certificate course, and to create designs that will give you skills to find employment.
To progress to our ‘Level 2 Technical Certificate in Floristry’, starting in September, you will need:
- To be working at Level 1 English and maths.
- Have good IT skills at Level 1 or above
- Have good levels of punctuality and attendance
- Have a portfolio of work in the subject area.
