What is the course about?
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start programme is a full-time training course designed to prepare Greater London residents for entry-level careers in cloud computing. Delivered in collaboration with AWS, the course runs Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, in a hybrid format (three days onsite and two days online). It combines hands-on technical training in cloud technologies with employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and interview preparation, helping learners become job-ready for roles in the IT and cloud sector.
This is a highly technical course aligned to Level 5 in terms of difficulty; however, it does not carry UCAS points as it leads to an industry certification rather than an academic qualification. You should be comfortable using a range of digital technologies. All applicants are normally required to complete English, maths and digital assessments to demonstrate Level 2 ability, although relevant prior qualifications may be considered in some cases. Applicants must also complete an AWS assessment as part of the selection process.Previous experience in IT or coding (in any language) is beneficial but not essential. Applications are assessed based on motivation, merit, and interview performance.
The course covers key cloud computing and IT fundamentals, including cloud foundations, Linux, networking, and security. You will develop practical skills in Python programming, databases, and AWS architecture. The programme also introduces emerging technologies such as generative AI and machine learning, alongside developing problem-solving and employability skills needed for entry-level roles in the tech industry.
The course is tutor-led and delivered through a blend of guided sessions, hands-on labs, and real-world, scenario-based learning in a hybrid format (onsite and online). Assessment is continuous throughout the course via practical tasks, labs, and coursework to demonstrate your skills and knowledge. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will receive a complimentary AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam voucher. You can then book and take the exam in your own time, in line with the validity period provided when the voucher is issued.
The programme is offered at no cost to learners. You will need access to your own laptop or computer to complete homework, independent study, and participate in online sessions, as devices are not provided for home use. Alternatively, you can use the technology resources available at WAES centres.
By the end of the course, you will be able to apply core cloud computing skills, including working with AWS services, basic networking, security, and cloud architecture. You will be able to write simple scripts using Python, manage cloud-based resources, and troubleshoot common technical issues. You will also have developed the professional and employability skills needed to pursue entry-level roles in cloud and IT, and be prepared to take the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification.
On successful completion, you can progress into entry-level roles in cloud and IT, such as technical support, cloud support, or junior infrastructure roles. You may also progress onto further study in cloud computing, networking, or cybersecurity, or continue building industry certifications within AWS and related technologies. The programme also provides support with CV writing and interview preparation.
