What is the course about?
The course introduces learners to the fundamentals of cybersecurity, including what cybercrime is and how it affects individuals and organisations. You will explore common online threats, the risks they pose, and the basic protective methods used to keep data and systems secure. Learners will also develop an understanding of key concepts such as user access control, secure working practices and the importance of recognising vulnerabilities in digital environments.
The course is a Level 1 qualification, so you will need to be a confident user of everyday IT and have a genuine interest in learning about cybersecurity. As part of your initial assessment, we will be looking for you to be working towards Level 1 across the areas identified, ensuring you have the foundation needed to begin developing your understanding of online safety and cyber risks.
For cybersecurity, you will explore different types of cybercrime and the risks they pose to individuals and organisations. You will learn about the effects of online threats, as well as the routine protective methods used to maintain cybersecurity, including user access control, recognising vulnerabilities and understanding the importance of safe and secure working practices.
You will be taught in the classroom through tutor led activities, demonstrations and cyber security tasks. Assessment is carried out through a portfolio of evidence, where you will complete set assignments and take part in observed practical activities to show your developing cyber security skills.
Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365. You will be also asked to install python programme.
By the end of the course, you will be able to identify different types of cybercrime and understand the risks they pose to individuals and organisations. You will know about routine protective methods used to maintain cybersecurity, including safe working practices, recognising vulnerabilities and the role of user access control. You will also have a clear understanding of the basic legislation and codes of conduct that support responsible and secure use of digital technologies.
Upon successful completion of Level 1, you may choose to continue developing your knowledge of online safety and digital security by progressing onto our Level 2 Principles of Cyber Security course. You may also use the skills gained on this programme to move into wider digital pathways, such as networking or software and programming, by studying our Level 2 Software & Programming qualification.
