What is the course about?
This qualification will develop the knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in the Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s sectors. It includes the roles played by workers, from principles and values through to health and safety and working with others. There is the option to take units in more specialised areas such as learning disability, sensory loss or mental health.The qualification:• is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them• allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors• allows learners to tailor their learning to their interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units• provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills• supports progression to Level 2 qualifications in health, social care or children's settings• provides learners with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the care sectors.In addition you will complete an English Functional skills course alongside. Familiarity and confidence with English as it is spoken in every day life is intrinsic to the course, as it does not have specific grammar and vocabulary input in the way that ESOL classes do. This is because it is for all learners and not only for people who are learning English as a second or other language. The course is especially suitable for students who are studying with a particular career or educational pathway in mind, to provide them with a context for the English skills they are learning.
This is a Level 1 course, therefore, learners will need to have or be working towards Entry Level 3 Functional skills in English, Maths and ICT to undertake this qualification. Additionally, you should have at least basic digital IT skills.
Introductory Awareness of Person-Centred Support in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings Understand the Principles and Values in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare Introductory Awareness of Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's SettingsAwareness of Protection and Safeguarding in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare Introduction to Communication in Health and Social Care (Adults and Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare Introductory Awareness of Health and Safety in Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings.You will also complete the Entry Level 3/Level 1 Functional Skills in English course alongside, if you do not hold an English qualification. The course is practically based. You will study reading (understanding layout and extracting information from texts), formal and informal writing (for example, e-mails, letters and articles) including punctuation and sentence structure, and using speaking and listening skills to give short talks and to participate fully and appropriately in group discussions.
You will be expected to have your own computer or laptop and a reliable source of internet. The course is an e portfolio course, where you will study the units and build a portfolio of evidence along with your tutor. You will be expected to attend each session in college when appropriate and meet deadlines for homework submissions.In terms of the English Functional skills, the course has three assessments; reading, writing and speaking & listening. You will have mock assessments before this, for practice.
Learners on a low income or in receipt of applicable benefits will not be required to pay a fee. We may also be able to provide a laptop*. You will need regular access to a computer or laptop and reliable internet service to complete this course. Once enrolled, learners will be able to download a free copy of Microsoft Office and will be given access to Microsoft office 365. There is a one off fee of £45 for One file and photo-copy.
By the end of the course, you will have gained the knowledge and understanding you need to make an informed choice about whether working with children and young people is right for you.This course will support you in preparing for your ‘next steps’ either in training or moving towards work. You could work towards a career in adult health and social care in a supervised job role. You will be able to progress on to the Level 2 qualification either in childcare or Adult Health and Social care.By the end of the English Functional Skills course you should have increased your confidence to read and write in English in workplace or everyday life situations, and to participate in conversations or discussions. You should be able to write e-mails, articles, reports or online forum posts to Entry 3 standard and be familiar with different text layouts and purposes, and extracting information from these.
•The Level 1 Diploma in Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children's and Young People's Settings•The Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care•The Level 2 Early Years Practitioner The progression from the Entry Level 3/level 1 Functional skills in English course is to Level 1/2 English Functional Skills. This is dependent on passing all three of the assessments to a sufficient standard and having a satisfactory record of attendance. For non-native speakers of English, progression might be to an ESOL course, to strengthen knowledge of grammar and vocabulary before tackling Level 1 English Functional Skills.
