What is the course about?
This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; and personal development and reflective practice. In order to acquire practical skills in working with children and young people within an educational setting, a placement in a primary or secondary school or college is required for a minimum of 200 hours for the duration to the course.
This is a Level 3 course, therefore, learners must have Functional Skills in English Level 2 writing, speaking and Listening skills and Functional Skills Maths Level 2 or GCSE English or Maths (grades A to C/ grade 4 to undertake this qualification. Additionally, you should have good digital IT skills and be able to independently save, retrieve and edit documents. You will need to have an interview with the Team before you are enrolled. You are also expected to have completed a level 2 teaching assistant course or must have attained considerable experience working in schools or colleges as a teaching assistant or a learning support assistant. You must have a placement in a school (primary/secondary) or a college for a minimum of 200 hours in the whole of academic year.
There are 16 mandatory units which learners need to complete all to achieve a Level 3 Diploma supporting teaching and learning. Some of the topics are as follows - Schools and colleges as organisations, Understand how to safeguard children and young people, understand how children and young people develop and Understand how to support learning of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
This course combines classroom learning with some online sessions. You will gain knowledge by attending the college and then apply the skills in a placement each week. You will be assessed by producing an e-portfolio of evidence that proves your ability and competence to work with children. You will also be assessed on your competency in supporting children by having direct observation and professional discussion with an experienced and qualified assessor.There is a requirement to complete a minimum of 200 hours of placement in a primary, secondary, or college school.
You may need to pay a fees for this qualification. This will be dependent on your personal circumstances and will be discussed at enrolment. You will need access to a home computer or laptop and a reliable internet source. Using a memory stick to store information can be advantageous. The qualification provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work in a variety of unsupervised job roles that support children and young people’s learning in schools or colleges. Roles this qualification will prepare you for include:• Teaching Assistant• Learning Support Assistant• Special Needs AssistantBy the end of this course you will have gained an accredited Level 3 qualification in Supporting teaching and learning. You will be able to work with others to support and promote children’s development. You will have working knowledge of the legislation, policies and procedures that are required by the OFSTED inspection. The course will have developed your ICT and research skills.
This qualification can lead to progression on to the Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges, a foundation degree, or specialist roles within the workforce.
