WAES hosted a digital event for our Full Stack Bootcamp and AWS re/Start learners, welcoming experts from Security HQ for an insightful session on careers in the cybersecurity industry.

The panel brought together a range of experienced professionals who shared practical advice, personal journeys, and insider knowledge on what employers look for in candidates.

In attendance was Rebecca Crouch, Lead Talent Acquisition, who offered valuable CV tips and guidance on standing out in a competitive job market. She highlighted the importance of tailoring applications to specific roles, clearly demonstrating technical skills, and showcasing real-world project experience.

Bertan Akkaya, Lead Cyber Security Consultant, shared his personal story of breaking into the industry, giving learners an honest and relatable account of the challenges and opportunities within cybersecurity. Roberta Brown, Associate Cyber Security Consultant and proud WAES alumna, also spoke about her journey from learner to industry professional, inspiring attendees with her progression and practical advice.

Doug Herbert, Principal Lead for Compliance and Accreditations, introduced learners to Security HQ, outlining where the organisation is based and the type of personalities and mindsets that thrive within their teams. He emphasised the importance of curiosity, resilience, and a genuine passion for problem-solving. Aimee Bowing, Head of Human Resources Generalist, further reinforced what makes a strong candidate, focusing on cultural fit and professional development.
