I grew up in Weymouth but eventually left when I was 18 and moved to Brighton. Throughout my life as a young adult I found it difficult to keep a job and even when I did land a job in retail it led to burnout quickly. Part of the reason was because of my undiagnosed autism and ADHD during my earlier years my brain seemed to be working twice as hard to comprehend things. I’ve only just been diagnosed with autism this January.

To be honest I used alcohol to deal with my issues it was almost self-medication, even though i was still going through these issues I still continued my learning journey so at just 24 I moved to London to help get sober and attend The London Metropolitan University to study furniture making I’d always been good at practical elements of tasks so interior, furniture and product design was of interest to me. Eventually I began to do some freelance carpentry as I could not afford a van, I would use public transport to transfer carpentry tools. Being a woman in the industry that is mainly male dominated meant there was a lot of misogyny and a lot of conflict. Amidst this I found myself depressed and relapsed and ended up in rehab however I have been 18 years Sober and given the 50th chance to live and maintaining my sobriety.

I came to WAES in September 2023 to study Level 1 UAL Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design) but I was bumped up to Level 3 UAL Diploma in Creative Practice (Graphic Design). The Tutor Caroline is dedicated and goes above and beyond to make sure learners are equipped for a job afterwards and that we have the knowledge and technical industry experience. All the equipment is provided based on my circumstances; I also received help with travel costs.

Some of the challenges I faced was having to explain my health conditions to someone who doesn’t understand. Which usually leaves me keeping to myself, but I continue to express myself and get my voice across.

My greatest achievement at WAES was being selected for the UAL Origins Creative where I received positive feedback for my artwork and further opportunities for the future. I also completed work experience at West creatives work for 4 weeks.
Studying this course has helped with my recovery in terms of putting direction and purpose to my art. My parents are also happier that I am being recognised it gives them peace of mind that I am on the right path.

Adult education changes lives, it’s never too late to start learning. With the right funding and support, anything is possible. At WAES, you truly feel valued, cared for, and encouraged to grow.
