My educational journey unfolded at the WAES Lisson Grove centre starting in April 2022. Initially, I made notable progress in enhancing my English skills through the Level 1 Functional English course at WAES.
Subsequently, I acquired specific ceramic skills, including wheel throwing, hand building techniques, and surface treatment, which have proven beneficial in my ongoing pursuit of the Level 2 UAL Diploma in Art and Design (ceramics).
Looking forward, I am set to attend two additional short courses—tile design and mould making/slip casting—to further fortify my proficiency in ceramics techniques.
My motivation for learning was to distract myself from my depression so I started looking for ways to express myself creatively, ceramics appealed to my sense of craft and skill set after attending an open day at WAES and viewing their ceramic studios gave me that extra push to study again. I hope to achieve a new sense of direction/purpose for my future which I believe I have so far through learning. My other motivation was to improve my social life.
I’ve met many wonderful people at WAES who share common interests. We mutually lean on each other for assistance and ideas. Being surrounded by like-minded people has diminished my sense of loneliness, as I no longer feel alone in facing life’s challenges. Engaging in ceramics serves as an additional means of self-expression, particularly when my efforts are acknowledged positively. one of my achievements to date was my artwork being selected to be on the front cover of the annual WAES Learner Awards programme.
In general, I believe my mental well-being has significantly improved, and I now approach the future with a positive outlook. Education has saved my life.
