I was in my final year of university studying Pharmacy in Sudan when I came to the UK to join my father under a family reunion scheme after the war started.

Being that this is my first time in the UK, I was very keen to improve my English and to connect with people who have experienced life in the UK much more than I have and build my confidence when speaking English. After doing some research I found the ESOL course on the WAES website and knew it was for me. Regarding the IELTS course I was looking for it in many other colleges, but they were very expensive for me. On my ESOL assessment day I asked the assessors if there are still places and they really supported me and spoke to the manager about my case and fortunately there was a space for me. (I needed to take the IELTS exam so I could go to university).

I enjoyed attending the ESOL Language Café at Westminster City Hall because it improved my confidence as well as my knowledge on how to speak English. I also appreciated that studying IELTS provided me with the best strategies to use in the exam. It also made me more aware of what my strengths are and what weaknesses i need to work on. I also had a great time at the Learner Awards where I was Learner of the Year for the ESOL department which is such an honourable achievement.

The teaching and support from WAES has been great I’m able to ask as many questions as I like without feeling dumb. My tutor made the course feel much easier she had so much patience. The Careers and Development Team really helped me with my UCAS application to study MPharm at Kingston University. I was supported all the way until I finally got my offer letter.

I feel that my overall experience at WAES as a learner has encouraged me to achieve more in life and that one day I will be something. So, if you are looking to start at WAES I 100% recommend you go for it!
