“I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia just after my teenage years. Being one of six kids in a single parent household was quite challenging because I was still trying to find ways to cope and it was difficult for my mother to cater to each child, as a result it also affected my anxiety and depression levels. Some of the difficulties I faced was being different in terms of socialising. I’m extremely introverted and was bullied from a young age because of this, I didn’t seem to have a voice and was taken advantage of, even in my adult years I experienced bullying. However I’ve had to work a lot on my self-esteem in terms of being good enough for myself and focusing on my own happiness which has made a huge difference.
Before starting at WAES, I trained to be a mental health nurse. However, due to personal illnesses and injuries, I’m unable to work in the field on a full-time basis so I did some agency work and I still do every so now and then as a vaccination nurse in schools. When the pandemic happened and we were in lock-down I began to focus on where I want to be in my future career. I took an online careers test, the questions were based on my personality based on my answers the result was that i belonged working in the creative sector so i made the decision to enrol at WAES.
Studying Level 3 NCFE Certificate in Web Design was tough at first especially coding. I mean, HTML is relatively easy to learn but then when you start to get into the cascading style sheets CSS and then the JavaScript it gets complicated but thanks to my tutor he presented a lot of scenarios where we can apply all the coding language, it made me more confident in my understanding.
Completing this course has been a massive achievement for me it’s given me lifelong skills to be able to help others just like me when it comes to accessible websites.”
