What is the course about?
This Level 1 NCFE Award is for beginners, or those with little experience. It will introduce you to the technical and creative skills used in the Fashion Design industry. It will teach you skills necessary to progress onto our UAL Level 2 course in Fashion starting in September.
This is a Level 1 course aimed at beginners with a keen interest in the subject.
- A minimum level of E3 Functional Skills in English is required for this course.
- You will also need to have basic IT skills as there are assignments each week that are carried out directly onto the computer.
- If you wish to move on to a Level 2 course, you will be advised to study Functional Skills, Level 1 English alongside this course.
The course is practical and theory based. You will learn about the fundamental materials, processes and skills used to creative fashion and textiles samples or basic garments, how to research and communicate ideas. You will be introduced to the sewing machine and associated equipment and how to create and construct a basic garment.
You will be taught by a fashion design specialist in a creative and friendly environment. You will be taught through practical demonstrations, research and hands on making. Assessment will be practical, and feedback will be given on a regular basis.
The materials fee covers some materials such as card, pattern paper, and a sketchbook. You will be required to provide your own fabric for your garments and for your experimentation activities. Calico will be charged at £2 per metre. For your self-directed study a basic sewing kit is required e.g. fabric scissors, pencils, masking tape, sewing threads, needles, unpick, paper, pattern-cutting paper, tape measure. Your own basic art and drawing materials would also be useful to have.
By the end of the course you will be able to research fashion design ideas, understand the fashion design process through illustrated fashion designs and produce a finished fashion product.
You will have the knowledge and skills to progress to Level 2 UAL Diploma in Fashion course (starting in September) to broaden your skills.
