What is the course about?
This UAL accredited course is designed to introduce you to the creative and practical skills required to study at a higher level in fashion design with the intent to work in the fashion design or related industries.
On this year long course, you will gain key knowledge, skills and understanding of the fashion design process so you can create your first designed garments. These be showcased in the end of year fashion show.
- A minimum level of Level 1 in English is required for this course.
- You will also need to have basic computer skills as there are regular digital assignments.
In terms 1 and 2 the tutor will guide you through class exercises and projects under these headings:
– Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in fashion design
– Introduction to contextual research in fashion design
– Introduction to communication skills in fashion design
– Solving 2D creative problems
– Solving 3D creative problems
– Solving time-based creative problems
You will then develop and produce a personal fashion project.
You will be taught by a fashion specialist, with technician support and supervision. As the course progresses, and your creative awareness and skills increase, you will be able to work in a self-directed and independent way on your final major project, the outcome of which will be displayed at the end of the year fashion show.
You will be expected to produce digital portfolios of work for assessment and upload these online. Formal assessment will take place at stages throughout the course, and you will receive verbal and written feedback.
Other costs include an investment in your time to complete self-directed study outside of the tutor led activities, around 4-6 hours per week.
By the end of the Level 1 you will have gained a thorough introduction into fashion creative practices and will have established systematic recording techniques, which will help with future development. You will be able to work independently with confidence.
You will have the knowledge and skills to progress to Level 2 UAL Diploma in Fashion Design, to broaden your skills.
