What is the course about?
This UAL accredited course is designed to develop your creative and practical skills required to work in the fashion industry. Through research, skill-based workshops and experimentation with a range of techniques and materials, you will begin to develop your knowledge of a wide range of creative fashion techniques. The garments you create will be showcased in the end of year fashion show.
Please note: This is a year-long course. It runs on Tuesdays, 09.30-16.00, and Wednesdays, 09.30-12.30
All applicants must have:
- An interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.
- English and maths at Level 1 or GCSE Grade 3/D and above
- Good IT skills at level 1 or above.
- Evidence of a creative portfolio, preferably in the subject area
In terms 1 and 2 the tutor will guide you through class exercises and projects under these headings:
– Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in fashion design
– Introduction to contextual research in fashion design
– Introduction to drawing skills
– Introduction to communication skills in fashion design
– Solving 2D creative problems
– Solving 3D creative problems
– Solving time-based creative problems
You will be taught by a fashion specialist, with technician support and supervision. As the course progresses, and your creative awareness and skills increase, you will be able to work in a self-directed and independent way on your final major project, the outcome of which will be displayed at the end of the year fashion show.
You will be expected to produce digital portfolios of work for assessment and upload these online. Formal assessment will take place at stages throughout the course, and you will receive verbal and written feedback.
Other costs include an investment in your time to complete self-directed study outside of the tutor led activities, around 6-8 hours per week.
By the end of the Level 2 you will have developed further understanding of the fashion creative practices and how to step out of your comfort zone whilst satisfying the requirements of a brief. You will be able to demonstrate how you are developing your own personal creative identify as a fashion practitioner by producing your own portfolio of work which will demonstrate your personal creative response to solving 2D and 3D fashion ideas. You will be able to work independently and build the confidence to start exploring and developing your own signature .
To progress to the Level 3 UAL Diploma in Fashion (starting in September):
- Learners must be working at Level 1 English and maths.
- Have good levels of punctuality and attendance
- Achieved a merit on level 2 diploma in the subject area.
- Have produced a portfolio of work in the subject area.
