What is the course about?
The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector is a qualification that has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills through introducing you to the hair and beauty industries and how you should present a professional image in the salon. To further enhance your practical skills you also cover the following hair and beauty units; plaiting or plaiting and twisting hair, shampoo and conditioning hair, themed face painting, styling hair using hairdressing techniques, basic make-up application, skin care, create an image using colour or hair and beauty techniques, colour hair using temporary colour, salon reception duties, how to follow health and safety and working with others in the hair and beauty sector. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in both hair and beauty and will provide you with the foundation for further learning. It will also enable you to perform your own services and to assist others in the salon.
You do not need to have any previous experience in Hair or Make-up but you do need to be at a minimum Level of Entry 3 Functional Skills. You will also need to have basic IT skills as there are written assignments each week that are carried out directly onto the computer. You must also be able to attend 100% to each class and from 9.30 – 3.30. There may also be an interview with a member of the Make-up department to make sure you are on the right level course. If you wish to move onto Level 2 courses, you will be advised to study English Functional Skills alongside the L1 Make-up course. This will help you to then qualify for L2 Make-up or Hairdressing after L1.
You will gain knowledge of the industry and its service including Health and Safety and how to prepare for the job market through research, interview techniques and teamwork.You will cover the following topics: Skin care and products, Day and Evening Make-up, Face Painting, Plaiting and Twisting, Blow drying and Styling and be able to use temporary tints to colour hair.
The course will be taught through a blend of practical work, demonstrations and theory classes delivered in the college salon. You will build a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed in order to demonstrate your competence and gain your qualification. You will need access to reliable internet and the use of a PC or laptop in order to attend the online sessions. The course includes weekly sessions on computers to complete written assignments, so you must have some basic IT skills to join this class.
You will be expected to provide your own make-up brushes. Make up products and Hair products and electrical equipment are provided. Your teacher will advise you on where to buy your kit, in the first session. There are bursaries available for learners on concessions. Advice on this can be accessed through the Learning Experience Team.
You will understand the fundamental skills and knowledge of the industry. You will be able to dry set, blow dry and wet set hair, apply makeup for day, evening and special occasions. You will be able to identify skin types be able to carry out skin analysis prior to make-up application. You will be able to assess hair types and shampoo and condition the hair using appropriate products.
Upon successful completion of this course and if you have the correct level of English ( L1 to move onto a L2 Make-up or Hair course) you can progress to any of the Level 2 courses in Makeup, Women’s Hairdressing or Barbering.
